Hi, I’m Layla! I don’t remember much about my first few weeks of life, but somehow I ended up at the NYC Animal Care and Control in Brooklyn at 4 weeks old, alone and scared. I don’t know what happened to my parents, or if I had any sisters or brothers, but I was in a really bad place. I was only there a couple of days when they put me on this list where I would fall asleep and never wake up. Just before that happened, I was rescued by Big Hands Little Paws. Another kitten my age, Lola, who was also alone, was rescued with me and we both were taken to a home in Williamsburg, where we had lots of fun and were given all the love (and food) we wanted.
When I first got there, I was doing really well. But then, all of a sudden my tummy started to hurt and I was sent to the doctor a couple of times. I thought I was feeling better and soon went to a new foster home. Within a couple of days, I started to feel sick again and it got really bad. I couldn’t eat a thing and weighed less than a pound. As I was rushed to the emergency room, I stopped breathing. My human friends at BHLP told the doctors to do everything they could to help me. I was told that I was intubated, and a very kind nurse had to squeeze an oxygen bag every 15 seconds for two hours until I started breathing on my own. The doctors did not think my little body would survive the night, but I did. I wanted to live, to continue playing with my friends and to love and be loved! After 6 days in the ICU, I was on my way to a full recovery.
That was a few months ago and I am now loving life. I am with a wonderful foster family, where I get lots of attention from everyone, love breakfast, lunch and dinner (I now weigh 5 pounds!), will play with anything on a string (even just the string), will chase any toy (but partial to balls), and will snuggle with anyone. All I need now is a family that will be mine forever. Will you make me part of yours?
